Story Threads

Story Threads align a character’s potential combat abilities with the tale the Loremaster wishes to spin. They establish a starting point for skills and masteries while also setting limitations on the number of actions a player can take and the strength of their defense. There are three options: Frayed, Heroic, and Mythic.

Frayed Thread

Blights and misery follow characters spun with a frayed thread. This challenging game mode is ideal for horror or coming-of-age stories but may prove difficult for typical adventures that push players to resolve problems through physical altercations. To a frayed character, a single Red Cap severely threatens life and limb. They might know a trade or higher education but don’t measure up to a heroic adventurer. They have seldom exceeded expectations—until now.

Heroic Thread

This is the default game mode, which lends itself to crunchy stories where combat is fast and lethal. Characters who follow a heroic thread tread the line between victory and ruin. Wearing grim expressions and bearing rusted weapons, these heroes delve deep into the dark places of Nimoria, guided only by their inner fire to see things through. If they return, they do so with scars, both physical and spiritual.

Mythic Thread

Characters woven with a mythic thread are more than mere heroes — they are legends rivaling Achilles and Odysseus. They confront world-ending threats armed with enchanted weapons and powerful spells, doing battle with dragons and demi-gods alike. This thread is suited for high fantasy stories where the characters are larger than life and action is the central focus of most sessions.
